Jak walks back to Milena, wiping his hands on a handkerchief that looked new, almost clean and fresh from a drier, but was infact a few months old, Jak having washed it with water every time it got too dirty to use. He stuffed the piece of cloth into his jeans pocket and sat down next to Milena and Paws.
'He's a cute little pup, ain't he.' He gently scratches behind Paws' ear, listening to him growl playfully. He turns at the sound of another greeting, the voice not yet familiar to him. He waves and gives a friendly greeting in return.

Luke smiled to the new one and watched as Gray went and took a seat next to him. He decided to join then and now their little group was circled around the dog. Gray was scratching its head, and this brought a smile to Luke's lips... nice to see the rambunctious boy had a soft side. Luke held his hand toward the one that called himself Jak.
"My name is Luke, it's nice to meet you mister..."

Jak stands up and turns fully, letting Luke take a good look at him as he shook his hand warmly.
'Name's Jackson. Jackson Daniels. Call me Jak.'
He takes his glasses off his face and gently cleans the lenses with his handkerchief, before slipping them back on comfortably. He motions to the little retriever, whom everyone is fussing over.
'That's Paws. I just found him before I found you guys.'

Luke smiled and shook the others hand firmly before tossing his hair out of his eyes and looking down at Paws, "I don't want to be a downer, but feeding him may get a little rough..."
Gray looked up at him and rolled his eyes, "Me and Jak'll just stroll down to Wal-Mart."
Luke shrugged and pat Gray's shoulder, "Do as you wish, just don't get killed."
Gray's scratched up face, back and arms still trickled blood and Luke was concerned, "Also, you shouldn't move too much... let those heal up."

Noticing that Gray had injuries, Jak nodded in agreement to Luke's statement.
'If you're bleeding, you'd better get yourself patched up. If you bleed out while you're out scavenging for supplies, I won't be there to save you. Rather, we won't be there to save you.'
He turns, after hearing a scraping noise coming from one of the back doors.
'Speaking of safety, let me remind you all that nowhere is safe in this city. If we wanna survive, we have to find a way out of the city.'
He goes to the door and opens it, already knowing that an Infected would jump out at him. He closes the door again swiftly in its face, stunning it and leaving it out cold for a few more hours.
'Let me repeat : We have to find a way out of the city.'

Having effectively disappeared from the general vicinity, Tanjuu moved over into the corner and tried to get a good place to watch the spectacle that is the human psyche. He found the best possible place to pull up a seat, the carcass of a man laying out along the floor.
The man appeared to be in the early 50's, much older than anyone still in the city, and a relativly clean corpse. The clothing left much to be desired; a large brown trenchcoat, grey pants, black boots, brown gloves and as a defining item, a grey ushanka atop his head. Apparently this once mobile man was a Ruskie, and one who seemed a bit bulky in all aspects, much like a bouncer or a bodyguard.
Tanjuu got as comfortable as possible, put his coke bottle down on the floor and watched on from there. That is to say he would have, had the body beneath him shifted and groaned slightly before it reached out and took his Coke.
"What the-Hey!" Obviously the mobster had not anticipated this.
The Russian shoved Tanjuu off and downed the bottle in 5 seconds flat. Wiping the corner of his mouth with his sleeve, the man belched loudly and turned back to Tanjuu.
Spasiba, Comrade."

"You can exit the city if you want... end up in suburbia where no one can find you-- yeah, that sounds smart."
Gray smirked and put his hands on his hips, "There's just as many zombies out there as in here, dude. I'd rather stay where people can find me... lots of people will be coming to Chicago-- it's a big city, that's where the survivors are gonna be..." He looked away and chewed on his cheek with annoyance.

Milena's round hazel eyes darted between the three men; her mouth a tiny 'o' of alarm. Any minute now, a full-fledged argument would break out. She didn't know what she would do if that happened. On one hand, she was sorely disappointed that the only group of survivors she had found was so small and disorganized, when she had been hoping to find some sort of tough, competent military operation with some master plan to save all the Infected and make the world alright again. On the the other hand, if this was the best it got, then it made no sense to leave. She clutched Paws tighter to her chest and gazed into space, trying to decide what to do.
“I want to stay here,” she mouthed silently. She only wished she were strong enough to make the words audible.
**
Donny was still on his walk, thinking, when he thought he saw a familiar figure in the distance. The word “Daddy!” burst from his small lungs. But when he ran to embrace his father, there was nothing there...
For the second time that day, he burst into noisy, messy sobs. Tears ran down his face and pooled in the dimples by his nose. It was time to face facts. Although Donny wanted to believe his father was looking for them, a nagging little voice in his head reminded him that the elder Rodrigues had left a long time before the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. His dad was dead. Or if he wasn't dead, then he didn't care enough about Donny and Jill to search for them.
He sat on the floor and buried his head in his arms. Why could he not shake the idea that, if Herschel was in Chicago, then his father was too? He needed to know for sure.
**
Jill eased out into the night, taking slow deep breaths and allowing the wind to cool her warm cheeks. How dare he? How dare he flatter himself that she was coming onto him, the arrogant asshole... There was nothing wrong with not wanting to be left alone...in the freaking dark...off in a corner by herself. Plus, you just don't SPEAK that way to a woman, especially a vulnerable one. What a tactless jackass.
Well, if she were to be totally honest, she had to admit that although she wasn't EXACTLY coming onto him, she had insinuated a little bit. But that didn't matter. He had exactly zero chance with her now. IF he had even had a chance to begin with.
Head held high, Jill swung her arms in time with her steps. She marched down the Planetarium's long driveway. Suddenly her heel slipped and she slid down the asphalt, arms windmilling, until she came to a shaky rest at the bottom of the hill. Breathing hard, she sat down for a minute to regain her nerve. Her heart was beating so hard she thought that all the zombies in a 10-mile radius must be able to hear it.
But the night was eerily silent. The ambiance was peaceful, almost. So Jill stood up, dusted off her pants, and kept moving.

'If we can strike out on our own, get out of the Planetarium, find a working radio. Maybe we'll find other survivors.'
Jak looked at Gray, hands on hips, like a mother berating a child after she had caught him/her with his/her hand in the proverbial cookie jar. He folded his arms and stared Gray in the eyes, giving the latter a good look at his white irises, even though those were cosmetically altered.
'We cannot, and I emphasise, cannot, stay here forever. Sooner or later the infected are gonna get wind that we're holding out here and after that happens, we are all going to die.'
Jak walks up until he is almost nose-to-nose with Gray.
'I have seen things that you have never been through. My friends have died at my feet, my last speck of hope gone in only a few seconds. You know how that makes you feel? It makes you want to just die, along with those that didn't make it. The fact that I was the only one to make it out alive back on the pier only adds to the feeling of hopelessness, that all your friends, no matter how recently made, are gone. Forever. And I don't want that to happen again.'
He turns and takes a swig from his bottle of warm Coke, before kneeling down to gently stroke Paws. 'I just....don't want anyone I meet to die a hopeless death. Never again.'

Milena took a deep breath and steeled her shoulders. This was it. If she didn't make herself heard now then she would never be heard. “I don't think you can say that. We've all been through hell. My parents are gone. The only person in my entire life who's ever treated me like a person was a bus driver who talked to me the whole way to Baltimore and bought me a sandwich and showed me pictures of his grandkids. I saw a Cannibal rip his head off and throw it at my feet. I know what hopeless is.”
Suddenly, Milena shuddered away. She didn't notice until now that Jak's eye's were all white, no irises, and the effect was spooky. “Begging your pardon,” she said quietly, looking at the floor, “But I came all the way from Baltimore looking for other survivors. I think this is it.”

Jak nods to Milena. 'Good. At least someone understands what I've been through.'
He stands and sighs. 'But anyway, if we are to stay here, we at least need to find some place safer to camp for the night. In the morning I'm going back to the city for supplies. If anyone wants to come with me, don't have to ask. Just tag along when I leave tomorrow.'

Gray shook with fury, trying disparately not to smash the guy's face in with his bat, "I watched Justin get eaten alive! I watched Chad and Jack get their skulls bashed in! I saw Alen get pushed off a building and splat onto the pavement after a fucking horde rushed him..." He threw the empty bottle at the other, "You're one of those jackass emo kids that thinks your life was worse than everyone's!" He spat at him, "Fuck that shit, fuck you, ass hole!"
He turned and began to walk away as tears began to stream down his face-- but he stopped and turned around again and screamed with everything within him, "I fucking shot my brother in the face and watched his head explode!" He was crying now and didn't want to look at them anymore. He turned and began to walk back through the corridors until he saw Donny. He sighed and walked over to the kid before falling to his knees and wrapping his arms around the boy gently.
"Miss your dad? Me too..."
----------------------------------------------------------
Luke watched Gray go before turning back to Luke, "I agree with him... We just spent so much time trying to get in here, why would we leave? I want to stay in the city, it's our best bet... Now is time for survival, sure, it isn't as action packed and exciting as the movies-- doing stuff like that will get you killed."
He crossed his arms and shivered, "I'm going to go get my hat and scarf and then find Jill... I left her alone..."

Donny's small shoulders shook with sobs. He had been listening in on the conversation for the past few minutes. “We can't leave Chicago,” he whispered hoarsely. “My father is here, and I think he needs help.” He turned into Gray's embrace. “We have to help him...”
**
Jill's spirits rose with every step she took. She put a little sway in her walk and hummed a few bars of ELO's “Rockaria”. It was so peaceful and tranquil out here. And she would bet her life that no one had seen stars like this for over a thousand years. She supposed that was the one plus about all of civilization being destroyed.
In order to get to her destination, Jill would have to either go south and double back or else brave the chilly lake, since the Planetarium was on a peninsula. She chose the former...it was warm out but not that warm. Plus she had horrible visions of zombie fish swimming up from the depths to gnaw at her legs.
What a waste of time it was though. She could see the building that was the Wal-mart on the mainland. Jill sighed and hefted her bag. She was beginning to feel a little woozy, but damned if she'd go back before she was good and ready. She owed it to herself to be stubborn for once.
But wait... the lightbulb inside Jill's head flickered and turned on. She straightened her jackets. Then she hoisted herself up into one of the trees that lined the street. She leaned back against the rough bark and shut her eyes, just for a second...

Jak caught the empty bottle in his hand and watched Gray storm off. He slowly crushed the empty bottle and threw it to one side. He sighed and sat down on the blood-stained floor. He was tired, stressed, and definitely didn't want to deal with a boy's fragile, traumatised mind.
He sighed again and gently stroked Paws. Okay, so maybe he had overreacted. Who wouldn't? What with a city full of mindless killing machines, including friends, relatives, even parents. He made up his mind to apologise to Gray later. For now, safety took high priority -
Fuck it, he would just go apologise to Gray now. He stood up, disarming himself and taking two sandwiches out of his backpack, before placing it next to Milena and Paws. He walked along the corridors, following the sounds of sobbing, before coming across Gray and another boy. He went to the two and knelt down, handing Gray one of the sandwiches.
'Sorry. I've been a bitch lately. Life's been a bitch lately. We've all gone through much. I'm just too damn tired to carry on like this. Will you accept my apologies?'
He sighs and sits down on the floor next to Gray.
'I know its not much, but it was all I could loot before the damn sons a bitches found me.'
He lowers his head and closes his eyes.
'The cunts took everything I had. Everything. And I bet they did the same to you and the rest of the sorry bunch back there. We all know what that feels like, and I'm sorry.'

Gray squeezed Donny a little tighter before scooping the boy into his lap and holding him. It felt good to be able to cry with someone cradled in his arms, and now he knew what it was like to be Gavin. Gray wasn't nearly as small as Donny when he and Gavin were out here alone, but Gavin still held him and cried with his face pressed against Gray's soft silver hair like he was a little kid and, honestly, Gray had loved it. When Jak came over and offered him a sandwich he took it wordlessly and dropped it into Donny's lap, finishing with a line from his brother's story, "There you go kid, a whole damn turkey with fixin's." He smiled sadly and rested his forehead to the top of Donny's head.
