"Fuck you."
He locked the doors and smirked at her through the window, briefly considering driving off again. He was going tired of this assholes and was REALLY tired of being the odd man out all the time. He sat back in the seat and then sighed before unlocking the windows, "Fine."

“Gray,” hissed Jill in a serious tone, quietly enough to give them a little privacy from the stranger. “I think you have a problem. I think we need to talk about some stuff. But right now, I'm not going to leave another survivor behind and you know I'm right. He can wait outside while we do our shit if you don't trust him.”
Then she gestured at the new guy. “Hop in, Batman, I'll even let you ride shotgun.” Without waiting for an answer she slid gracefully into the back seat and massaged her bad knee slowly. Jill was starting to think the pain in her leg would never completely go away. Or the pain in her head, or for that matter the old softball injury in her shoulder. She'd be one of those creaky old women grumbling about their joints acting up whenever it rained. If she even lived that long.

Gray looked over his shoulder at her and glarred, "I know he's a survivor but you and your idiot friends need to stop trusting every fucker we come across! I'm tired of the way you fucks treat me, I'm the only one with a god damned brain around here." He turned back around and slammed the car into drive and waited for the man to get in, chewing on his cheek in frustration, ready to grab the bat from between his legs and ram it into the man's face if it were necessary.

“O...K...” Jill said flatly. “I'm going to forget the fact that you just called me an idiot and that you seem to look down on me because of my background and my ethnicity and I will refrain from reminding you that I had a high enough IQ to graduate from a two-year nursing program in one year and that I have been raising a child for eight years and all by myself for the past two years and that sort of thing gives a person a lot of valuable experience and common sense. Instead I will just say, let's go check out the you-know-where and we can talk about our differences in philosophy later.” She wanted to kick the back of Gray's seat in anger. Seriously, did he think anything would be gained by alienating other survivors? But she kept her annoyance in check and flashed the rearview mirror a brilliant smile instead.

Oh... shit. What the hell have I gotten myself into? This Jill seems like a nice enough person, but I don't trust the teen. And why should I? From the way he's twitching, that bat's gonna whip up into my face if I say even one thing outta line... Maybe I'll just have to test that theory.
Glancing at the rearview mirror, Foxtrot returned Jill's smile with a grin of his own.

"Oh yeah, Jill, pull the race card!" He picked up a cheesy Hispanic accent as he pulled away and began to drive down the highway toward the AT&T building, "I from Mexico, I do good for meself, I have kid at twelve and raise him fine, meester!" He dropped the accent and glared at her through the mirror, "Yeah, that will make you sound smarter and get me to treat you like a respectable human being."
He rolled his eyes and looked at the road ahead. It was getting dark and only one of the headlights worked so he would have to pay close attention to what he was doing. He flicked on the radio and searched the stations before laughing at himself and shutting it off, "Guess those aren't broadcasted any more, huh?"
He glanced at Foxtrot, "Anywho, I guess I'm stuck with you... so-- I'm Gray," he thrust a thumb over his shoulder, "and that one is Jill... She's cool most the time but is kinda pissing me off tonight. Where you from, Foxtrot? You can drop the phony names and bullshit, the American army is dead."

Jill took the high road and said not a word. Instead she glared daggers at the back of his head. She really, really, really should let the little fag get under her skin. “I'm cool all of the time, you stupid sonuvabitch,” she retorted after a long pause, deliberately raising the corner of her lips in a half-smile to infuriate Gray. “Ain't my fault you're too much of a dumbass to recognize that.”

While he didn't appreciate the racist remark Gray made, he felt it was necessary to answer the question.
"The United States Army may not be in commission Gray, but they can go to hell for all I could care. Those bastards wouldn’t be risking their friggen’ necks even if they were still around!” Foxtrot began to rant angrily, the American accent starting to slip into his natural born Australian.
“Back in Australia we didn’t have the enforced trials and executions, we focused on the importance of your fellow soldier and we got the job done just fine and dandy. Then we started getting advice from your fucknut generals and everything went to shit. They took the court martial idea and went with it, suddenly only a certain percentage of people were allowed to fight for their country! The death toll went up and we became a bastardized version of American stereotypical society!”
He began to calm down a little, visibly relaxing in his seat.
“Bottom line; I choose to keep the name to distance myself from that as much as possible, rather be not affiliated with them any longer. We mercenaries may work for money, but at least we have some respect.”

“Gray,” Jill said suddenly. “Take a left here. I wanna check something out.”

Gray took the left he was commanded to take and turned to look at the fellow sitting next to him his brow quirked, "You kept the name the army gave you... to distance yourself from them..." He nodded slowly, "That makes sense..." he rolled his eyes and looked back to the dark road.
"Damnit, there's another guy in the road..."

Foxtrot could only express the apparent idiocy of Gray's misunderstanding with the ever classic facepalm. From under his hand, he groaned with a manner that suggested the phrase 'it's is gonna be a loooong time before we part ways.'
"Were you not paying attention? The army didn't give me the name, no army gives their soldiers codenames. To them, you're either a private, a civillian or prime cannon fodder! This name was earned through the respect of my fellow mercs n' I'm damned if I ever think of dismissing it."
He paused a moment to look out the front window, indeed there was someone else on the road and there was a moderately high chance they would end up classified under 'crazies.'
"I'm sure you know about the mercenary stereotype, selfish trigger happy bitchgunners in it for the money and nothing else. I'm willing to admit the majority of them are very much like that, but when people in these 'honourable marches for patriotism' can be excecuted for following their beliefs and wishes, what the fuck's the point?"
Exhaling deeply, he glanced back up at the approaching man, woman or thing on the road.

Jill grinned ironically. "Well, this is just one big fucking party, ain't it?" she proclaimed. Gray would be oh-so-thrilled if she made him pick up yet another hitchhiker. He'd probably shit a brick. She rolled down her window. "You OK, sir?" she yelled.

Gray, noticing it was definitely a zombie, by the greenish skin and rotting flesh, floored it and ran over the mother fucker, "I'm dropping you two off at the Planetarium and getting the fuck out. I have tried to be nice, I have tried to be patient, but I am god damn sick of you condescending bitches."
He took his hands from the wheel and ran them roughly through his hair, they were shaking badly and his breathing waivered. Gray wasn't doing so well and it was slowly getting more and more obvious that he was at his breaking point. He sighed and closed his eyes, resting his forehead against the wheel for a few minutes before doing a three point and heading back down the road, "Tell Donny I said bye, ok, Jill? I love that kid..."

“Are you happy, Gray?” Jill asked abruptly. “I mean in general, with your life right now.”
She let the absurdity of that statement sink in.
“I know we don't understand each other all the time but here's the facts as I see them. Life sucks. But guess what? You're not going to be any happier as a lone wolf than you are now.”
She paused for a second. “There are only three things in the world I care about right now. Number one: Donny. Number two: Me. Number three: Getting my old life back. I know you think that's impossible. But we're alive. Batman here is alive. The whole gang back at the Planetarium is still alive. That's a damn good start, don't you see? That's almost a small town right there. We have a chance at rebuilding society if we can just help each other and stick together. Maybe that's idealistic, I really don't give a shit. But if there's any chance at all at getting humanity back, isn't it worth the risk of trying to help other survivors?”
With that, Jill gripped Gray's shoulder. She was no good at this motivational thing, but she needed him to hear her.
“So what I'm saying is don't go yet. We need you. I need you. All the other survivors need you. You're part of this community, whether you like it or not. There's a time to give up hope, but I swear to you that this is not it.”

"You fuckers don't 'need' me. You don't give a SHIT about me. You got Tanjuu and his guns, you got Batman and his guns. You got your gun, Don's got his. That's enough. I could fuckin' get eaten alive right now and nobody would give a great god damn! So I'm gonna take you back to the Planetarium and take this car to the Sears tower and climb it. I'm gonna get to the top and I'm gonna sit and wait for a damn helicopter."
He sat silent, glancing at his reflection on the glass that revealed a man Gray didn't know. A man with dark brown hair with bleach blond tips, cold eyes, a scratched up face and look about him that said, "Dude, I will fuck you up." He looked away, it sickened him to think that that was him, what he had become. Sure he wanted friends, he wanted to be around other people, he wanted to survive, but the others didn't seem in to the idea of letting him join them.
So he quit.
