He released his grip on his shoulders and stretched out his legs, letting his bat think to the floor between his knees. He stood, his knees popping, and fetched his bat before roughly running his arm under his nose like a little kid and wiping his arm on his black tank top before turning and looking at Jill, "Huh," he sniffed, "That actually sounds kinda cool."
He offered her a half hearted smile and clapped her on the shoulder, "You're a good kid, Jill." He snickered and stuck out his tongue before skipping toward the telescope, bat swinging in his right hand.

When Jill was in school, her favorite subject had been astronomy. She knew exactly where the magical red button was that would open up the dome enough for them to look out.
“Here,” she said, tossing Gray a big book of celestial coordinates. “Find us something pretty to look at. Take our minds off all this bullshit.”

Gray flipped to the middle of the book and his finger immediately rested on a shiny purple thing that looked like clouds in space. Fuck if he knew what the hell it was but it was pretty. He shoved the book in her direction and smiled weakly, "This."

Gray's choice was a violet and turquoise nebula, high in the east over the lake. Jill perused a case full of lenses and slid one into the eyepiece.
“Dude,” she complained, fiddling with a pair of knobs, “I can't see anything. Wait...OK, here we go.” When the object finally came into focus she stopped sharply.
“Gray...” Jill trailed off, her frightened eyes staring into his. “There's scratches on the lens. I can almost make out letters.”
She inhaled slowly. “I think it's a message.”

"You're shittin' me."
He shoved her out of the way and looked into the lens, almost immediately pulling away in panic and met her terrified eyes with his, "What the fuck? What does it say Jill?" He was shaking and his knuckles were turning white with the insane grip that he was gaining on his bat.

Jill shoved Gray back, regaining her spot. “The letters are too small; I can't get the eyepiece to focus that good.” She peered up at the top of the dome, formulating a plan.
“Whatever it is, it's carved into the primary lens. If we climb up there we can detach it and look at the lens itself.

Gray nodded and pulled her from the chair a little roughly.
"Lets go, how do we get out?"
He was excited and it showed on his elated face. He tugged at her hand like a kid in Toys R Us leading his mom to "the best toy ever made".

Jill surveyed the room for a bit. There was a catwalk about halfway up that went around the room.. “Hmm... You're bigger than I am; if you give me a boost I can reach the bottom of that ladder enough to knock it loose, and then we use that to climb up to the catwalk.”

Gray nodded, "Haha, you admitted to my manly beastlyness." He grinned and sauntered across the room to get closer to the ladder. When he thought he was close enough he bent and laced his hands together like a cheerleader getting ready to launch a slut she called her "friend" into outer space. He tossed his hair from his eyes and looked up to her-- but then he stopped, "Maybe you should just come over here and get on my shoulders."
He remained bent, waiting for her to crouch over his head on his shoulders so he could stand and get her closer to the ladder.
"If you fall I think I'll be ok, with an ass like that landing on my head not much damage will ensue. Plenty of cushion for impact."

Jill snorted a little, “Darlin', you'd like that. My ass on your head would be the most action you've ever gotten in your entire life.” She slung a leg gracefully across his neck and sat on his shoulders. “You stand up first, then I'll be able to stand up if I can use the wall for balance.”

Gray began to laugh so hard he fell forward a little and then steadied himself with his hand, "Sweety, you don't know me very well. Me and Jay used to get it on and on and on and on." He laughed again and readied himself to stand. He let out a little bit of an "oomph" as he stood, squats were never his thing. His hand immediately wrapped around her ankle to keep her steady. When he had regained his balance he removed his hand and planted it firmly against the wall to add a little more stability to their human tower.

“On and on and on and on, huh? Well, maybe you can give me some tips,” Jill grunted. She pushed herself up, balancing precariously on Gray's narrow shoulders. One hand touched the wall lightly, the other swatted ineffectually at the dangling ladder. Straining, Jill stood up higher on her toes. “Almost...got...it,” she wheezed. In desperation she lunged, feeling herself lose contact with Gray, and then she began the inevitable crash to the ground.
Luckily, the ladder was loosened. It clattered loudly and lengthened, stopping two feet above the floor.

When she jumped, Gray fell backward and hit the ground with a loud "fuck". He sat up and looked at her, "Ugh! You were digging your ten ton toes into my god-damned jugular." He rubbed at his neck and looked up the ladder to the catwalk. He smiled weakly and stood, motioning for Jill to get up. He grabbed the side of the ladder and pulled as hard as he could. He even clapped his hands against it a few times.
"It seems sturdy enough, bit still, you first."

Jill scrambled up the ladder, ignoring its creaks and groans, and held out a hand to Gray, all the while imagining who the message could be from.
“I wonder who left it,” Jill pondered out loud. “I wonder if it's a warning.”

Gray shrugged as he looked up to her, "Who knows?" Gray gripped the waistband of his pants and unfastened one of the belts that hung from them. He wrapped this around the handle of his bat and clicked it into the grommet before checking that the metal beating stick was securely in place. He took hold of the rung at his eye level and scrambled up. He was fast, faster than what was necessary, his back clanging against the rungs every step of the way. It was another one of those things he had learned with Justin. How to get the fuck off the street in 10 seconds. Gray's face flew up before Jill and he offered her a wolfish grin, "Ello, love." He chuckled and stepped onto the catwalk and looked down, hands over the rails, "Kinda high, huh?" He released his bat from the belt and re-clipped it into place. Mr. Tripp had created something useful without even trying, Gray reckoned, unless the acclaimed Hot Topic designer had zombie invasions in mind when he invented "bondage pants".
