Jill was in hysterics. Bud had to physically restrain the shrieking, flailing woman from lashing out. “Calm DOWN,” he said firmly. Then, “Do you WANT those fuckers to hear us?” Finally he wrenched her arms behind her back and forced her to the concrete floor. All the while Jill was wailing as if she were being killed. Finally she succumbed, sobbing gently.
Bud surveyed the small group in the warehouse. As one of the oldest there, he felt responsible for those gathered around him, despite the fact that he didn't have a paternal bone in his body. He would do whatever it took to get her son back. And despite what his tattoo said, he would show no mercy to the bastard who had abducted young Donovan.
“OK,” he announced. “It's time to look at the facts: The lord came in, snatched Donny, and leapt back out through that window there.” Bud pointed to the window in question, and the group turned to gaze as one at the eerie plastic curtains blowing in the breeze. He continued, “We pursued him west as far as we could, but he was too fast. We have reason to believe that the lord is keeping him alive, or else the lord would have just killed him right there. So what do we do? Do we go after him? And how?”
He left unspoken the other question, but he knew they all were thinking it: Why hadn't Donny been killed instantly? What, if anything, was the Lord planning?
