Stunned, Ben let himself be hugged because he didn't know what else to do. But all his senses were on alert and the fine hairs on the back of his neck were prickling. “Benjamen Rodrigues,” he said to the young man's retreating back. “Ben if it's easier.” He cracked his knuckles and and started to follow him up the ladder.
“Wait,” Ben said suddenly, stopping in his tracks halfway up the ladder, “Who is this doctor? What does he do?” He tried (almost successfully) to keep the rage out of his voice. But the bile rose in his stomach, and he had to blink several times rapidly to clear the red from his vision. If he ever met this doctor, he could guarantee that only one of them would live.
It was the doctors that had invented the serum...It was the doctors who had ruined the world...

Gray didn't look back over his shoulder as he spoke, "She. And I have no idea... she ran off while I took a nap."
He reached the top of the ladder and turned, kneeling and offering a hand to the man below him. His mint green eyes flicked up over the man's head and scanned the rooftop to look for any unexpected visitors. When he was sure everything was ok, he looked back down to the man and smiled almost sweetly.

Neena was still in the store she had hidden in. She'd taken a moment after the rush of zombies to take in her surroundings and realized that she was in a dollar store. She moved around the store, slowly grabbing anything she thought would be useful: candy bars, bottles of drinks, even a few things like hangers. She didn't even know if any of the others were still alive, or if they even cared if she was. She shrugged it off and looked out of the gate slowly, checking to make sure every zombie was gone, before unlocking the gate and stepping out into the open again, again heading for the food court.

'Ben, eh?'
Jak had heard the exchange between Gray and the newcomer as the younger man welcomed the older man to the roof. He looked up from where he sat, and waved, albeit wearily.
'And my name's Jak. Our friend over there is Dmitriy.' He pointed to the Russian pilot.

Dmitriy looked back at the ladder with a look half full of joy and half full of confusion. At first he thought a zombie had climbed up, but as the other survivors greeted the figure with less than hostile gestures, he figured that the man must have been clean. Reproachfully, the pilot approached the man, Ben.
"Soldier?" It was a guess, but the newcomer had that sort of military air to him. He gave a casual salute, some what because he was unaware of the other's rank, but mostly because he could care less for the american military. "The name is Dmitriy Tskolan, Lieutenant Colonel in Air National Guard."

Neena reached the food court uneventfully. She climbed behind a counter, pulling out what was left of any food and putting the wrapped things in her bag before climbing back out. Moving again down the corridor back to where she supposed they still were, she moved quietly, listening. Other than the occasional zombie there was no noise that she could hear. Weren't they still down there? There's no way that they would be silent after the horde. She moved carefully, trying not to disturb anything as she moved, and watching around her so nothing could catch her off guard.
As she turned her head, she paused, catching a glimmer of movement from the corner of her eye, something moving behind her. She held her breath as her heart began to pound. She hadn't caught a glimpse of what it was, only that it was moving slowly back and forth, and was closer to the ground than a normal zombie. It was hiding...no...stalking. Slowly, keeping her head turned, she moved on, trying to watch for the shadow again. It passed behind her a second time, weaving a zigzag pattern about twenty feet behind her.
She paused again for a moment before turning to look straight ahead, tightening her bag on her shoulder, and running toward where she had left the others.

Jak, after resting for that short while, stood up again, stretching and drawing his pistol. He made his way to the ladder, clambering down it while giving Gray the reason for his departure : 'I'm heading off to look for Neena.'
Figuring that the poor doctor wouldn't be able to find them where he stood, he made his way back to where they had first met, hoping to either meet her on the way or see her there.

"Might want some backup, no?" Dmitiry hurried after the man, unshouldering his rifle as he moved. The airman checked the clip and racked the bolt before safing the gun and clambering down after the first survivor he had talked to. "What is neena?" He hopped the last few feet to the ground and peered down the hallway. It seemed to be clear of baddies, but who knew how many lurked around the corner.
The other man, Jak was his name, solved the zombie or no zombie problem for dmitriy by moving out and into the main halls of the mall. Dmitriy followed about 10 feet behind Jak, and about five feet to his left. He figured that if something jumped him or the other man, they were far enough apart that they wouldn't be taken down at the same time. As they moved, he constantly kept checking over his shoulder.

Jak reached the intended meeting spot and sat down on the same bench. He looked at the Russian soldier, who had tagged along to give him backup.
'Neena's a doctor I met just now. Ya know, doctors? They treat your injuries and the like?'

Neena ran as fast as she could, knowing that at that rate she wouldn't be able to run faster than her "stalker". She was already breathing heavily, and the bag was hitting her side in an awkward way. Finally, she saw Jak on the bench, and the soldier beside him. "R...run!" She breathed out the word as loudly as she could with her lack of breath from the run. She quickly came up to them, looking behind her and taking a moment to catch a breath. "T...there's...a leach back there..." She panted heavily, trying to get a good breath. "We need...to get out of here..."

Jak nodded, even though he didn't know what a Leech was, other than the ones that sucked your blood that lived in swamps. He took Neena and led her, quickly, to the ladder to the roof where Gray and Ben were.

In the meantime, Ben and Gray were left alone on the rooftop. Ben hadn't yet had time to respond to the Russian's inquiry.
How could he answer a question like that? The short answer was “No, not anymore.” The longer answer was, “Those motherfuckers tried to kill me and now I'm going to destroy every last fucking one of them for what they did to me and my family and the whole damn world.”
In order to calm his raging nerves he turned to Gray and said, “Where do you hail from?”

Gray grinned and set his bat on the ground before putting his hands on his hips and announcing as confidently and pridefully as he could, "A trailer in the middle of farming country! Moran, Kansas!"
What little remained of his southern accent wafted through the air until it was shot to smithereens by the boy's cackling laughter.
"Sorry," the drawl hadn't quite left him yet, "I have fun tellin' people that in the worst of times." He picked up his bat and slung it over his shoulder, "Most folks don't think a country boy could have made it for this long."
He smiled sadly and started walking toward the edge of the roof, silently reflecting on his home town and all the people he had left behind before the world went to hell. He missed them. They were probably dead now.
If only he had known he would never see them again... he would have never gone to Chicago.
"I miss my mom."

“Yeah, well, I came from Bumblefuck, Mississippi and I held the title for World's Biggest Fuckup, and look at me now, I'm the king of the fuckin' world,” Ben said dryly and with only a hint of bitterness. “Sorry bout that. I guess normal small-talk doesn't work so great in this situation.”
Gray missed his mom... Well, Ben could give two figs for what he felt about his own mom, but he missed his son so bad it hurt. He wondered if Donny had grown any... If Jill had ever convinced the little boy to part with Ben's ratty old fatigues that for some reason had served as a security blanket... If Jill had found another man before she died.

Finally, Neena caught a breath and quickly climbed the latter to the rooftop where she heard the voices of people above. She climbed up on the roof, seeing Gray first. "'Least you survived, kid..." She was still breathing heavily and moved out of the way of the other two coming up the latter. "You two better hurry..."
