Stepping around the boy on the floor, she shook the man's hand firmly. "Neena." She shifted the bag on her shoulder slightly before putting her axe against the wall near her, giving her arms a break.

Jak nodded and shook Neena's hand. He shifted the combat harness on his body to a more comfortable position and rested his arms on his rifle. The harness was worn over his civvy clothes, which were slightly dirty and crumpled.
'I just got here. Like you. Only from the back door instead from the front. And from the sounds of things, lucky you didn't get attacked by that Vermin out there.'

Gray stayed where he was, propped up against the wall, he was tired and didn't think this dude deserved a handshake. He reclined a little against the fencing and saluted him with a quick flick of his two fingers off his forehead-- a gesture that was slowly becoming his trade mark, "Howdy, I'm Gray."

"So you haven't gotten a chance to see if anything in here is still usable?" She looked down the corridors of the mall, checking the names of the stores. She wanted to re-stock some of her supplies in her bag if she could and maybe eat a better meal than the one before.

Jak shook his head and removed the glasses from his face, cleaning them on his shirt before sticking them back onto his face.
'Nope. Haven't checked any of the shops for anything usable. Was going to, but then I saw this beautiful bench and I drifted off to sleep. Then I saw you two.'
He hefted the rifle slung on his shoulder.
'Well, strength in numbers. If you want my pistol, I can let you borrow it. Until we find a gun store in here, I'm gonna share my firepower.'
He took out the pistol from its holster and held it by the barrel, its grip pointed at Neena.

Gray slumped and his head fell, falling into the cradle of his arms cross on top of his knees. His bat was protectively laid across his lap, in the fold of his torso and his thighs. His back heaved evenly and his breathing became slowly louder until it was obvious that he was sleeping. Well, too.
It had been a few days since he had gotten any sleep, what with zombies everywhere. The last time he slept, it was in a bed in an abandoned JC Penny's-- but that hadn't lasted long. He had awaken to the sound of a terrible crunching sound in the perfect pitch black of night...
He sat up, eyes wide, trying disparately to see into the darkness, instinctively reaching for his bat. He held it before him defensively and looked around, listening. Beneath the crunching and slurping, he thought he could hear faint cries-- gurgled cries, and not too far off either. Noticing that he was shaking terribly, Gray reached out into the darkness and wrapped his hand around the smooth, cold barrel of his flashlight. As he did so, his finger brushed against his soft sheets... and were they wet? He tested this by pressing down into the bed with his palm, fingers splayed-- a liquid pooled over his hand and he retracted with a muffled shriek. He heard movement and recoiled against the headboard, still as can be, bat in one hand, flashlight in the other.
And did he dare turn it on? Yes, actually. Pressing the flashlight into the bed, he flicked the little switch and watched as a dim ring of light encircled the point of impact. He raised it slowly to see his sheets, once white, now completely crimson. The noises and movement had stopped and as the flood of light filled the room, Gray's heart felt as if it was shrinking in his chest with unimaginable horror. Before him, on the foot of his bed, sat a Leach, a human body in it's clawed hands, white eyes shining back at him. In it's mouth was the head of a young girl, it's teeth sunk deep into one eye socket, the other penetrated her cheek. He could see it in her lolling, gasping mouth, poking into her tongue. Her body was twisted in its hands, her belly torn open, spewing its entrails onto his bed, the bulk of which the thing clutched in its clawed hands.
He felt the hairs on the back of his neck bristle, could smell her blood for what it was, and raised his bat. The flashlight flicked, and went dead as the wet thunking sound of his bat against the creature's skull filled the room. For those who wonder, he struck the thing sixty seven times before he was satisfied. When he was through, Gray fled the building as fast as he could and was unable to sleep for the next few days...
Now, however, his body could no longer stay awake and he was taken by sleep, regardless of his thirst.

Jak looked at the young man, Gray, sleeping soundly where he had once stood. He shook his head, knowing that the young man needed his rest, but someplace safer. He turned to Neena, still offering her his only other gun, and asked her :
'You mind scouting 'round alone? Kiddo here can't rest all by himself.'

Ben followed the others from a distance, but only made it as far as the door that the young man had bashed in. Something bad was in this place. He could tell by the aura of gloom that surrounded the mall... every instinct in his body screamed at him to run.
Ben was no coward, but this mall... Big can of worms that he did not want to open. Some things were better left untouched. So he retreated. He would keep an eye on these survivors from afar. If he could help, he would, but until then, he would keep a safe distance.

Neena looked at the gun that was offered to her, politely declining. "I'll go look, but I won't use that...I'm fine with just this..." She grabbed her axe again before turning to head into the depths of the mall. Slowly, she made her way down the dark hall, looking slowly in the abandoned stores. Just like any other mall, most of the stores consisted of clothing stores, nothing of much interest. She supposed the security office would have some medical supplies she could look through, if she could find it, and possibly a few other smaller stores. Then, of course, there was the food court that she could look through. She decided that that would be the easiest route, and she followed the marked signs toward the food court.

Jak holstered his pistol as Neena politely declined, and as she moved off, he wished her luck, before stationing himself on a bench near where to Gray was sleeping. He watched the carpark, scanning for movement, and generally making sure that the three survivors would be safe in the mall.

When Ben tried to leave, something wouldn't let him. Some instinct even older than fear kept him glued in place. He inhaled slowly, trying to scent the thing that was fast approaching, but all he could smell was the vibrant, in-your-face cinnamon aroma of his candles. He crouched between two parked cars and became very still, more predator than prey even though he was human and they were Infected.
When he heard the noise above him, he was ready. Leaping straight up in the air he slashed at the creature with his hunting knife, neatly removing the thing's foot. The zombie fell to the ground hissing and scrambled for him on its hands and good foot. Ben whirled to face it and leapt again, landing on its back rodeo style. The creature rolled over and over, howling fit to wake the dead, but Ben stuck to it like glue. He wouldn't be dismantled until he was good and ready, thank you very much.
Suddenly Ben gagged on a mouthful of dirt, giving the zombie just enough purchase to slip out from underneath him. The beast was too slow, though. Ben caught it and slammed its head into the concrete, stunning it briefly. While the zombie was recovering, Ben slid off his belt and swiftly knotted the creature's hands together so that it was completely hobbled. “You're coming home with me, you Rotting Bastard,” Ben hissed joyfully and stood up, barely believing his luck. He gazed at his prize.
It was just your average, garden-variety Infected. Ugly fucker, too. It clacked its teeth at him, which Ben really didn't appreciate, and so he stomped hard on its other foot, shattering the bone. The zombie whimpered, subdued.
“I dub thee Pauley,” Ben said finally, after a long silence during which they both started at each other with intense hatred. Underneath the flaking skin and festering wounds, the thing bore a remarkable resemblance to Pauley Shore.

((Why would you drag a zombie around with you? O.o?))
Gray stirred a little and opened his eyes, "Ugh, thirsty..."
He stood, grabbing his bat, and walked mindlessly down the hall toward the bathrooms. Here he stopped and took a long drink of water from the water fountain there and then returned to where Jak was sitting. He took a seat next to him on the bench and smiled wearily, "What's up?"
Then he jumped at the sound of a car alarm going off wildly in the parking lot.
"Fuck, what the hell??"
The sound caught the attention of the zombies around to hear it... they didn't come rushing yet, but it was obvious they soon would.

[[Holy crap why WOULDN'T you want a zombie? You could experiment on it and try to find a cure a la I Am Legend, you could experiment to find things that they hate or will kill them a la the the slime in Ghostbusters 2... You could use it as a decoy, or as bait to draw a horde if you manage to find yourself in possession of a WMD you want to get rid of... You could stick a radio collar on it to track its migration patterns...or train it to pull a little cart...:-D And that's just off the top of my head!]]
When the alarm went off, Ben and Pauley froze accordingly. “Goddammit! Alright, you motherfucker, on your feet!” Ben barked. “On your foot!” he amended as he realized he had already disposed of the zombie's left foot. When it became obvious Pauley wasn't going anywhere under Ben's orders, he finally just hauled the thing up by the scruff of the neck Pauley snarled somewhat at this mistreatment.
So the question now was, was it closer to get back to the Michael's, or to go into the mall? Ben's personal creed had always been, “No retreat, no surrender.” But a close second was “Trust your instincts.”
The mall was closer, so Ben's decision was made for him.

Neena barely heard the sound as she continued moving down the corridors. As her ears deciphered what the sound was, she pressed hard against one wall, holding her breath and listening for anything to be coming toward her. She had almost made it to the food court, so she sucked it up and started moving again, slowly at first, still listening, before taking up her normal walk again.
Finally, she reached the final stretch, one hallway intersecting the main hall, which she was in. After the large opening, was the food court, but in the large opening was the small problem.: two normal infected, alert from the alarm. She took a deep breath, watching them before stepping out into the intersection, holding her axe tightly. The two came at him only seconds apart, giving her only a moment to dispose of one before the other.
She gritted her teeth, taking a swing at the first one, catching it in the shoulder, but the force pushing him aside for the moment. She took the moment to swing back, hitting the other in the temple with the blunt edge of the axe. The zombie crumpled to the ground and she turned back to the other, taking another swing at his head and impacting with a horrible sounding crack. She breathed heavily as she gathered herself again and headed the rest of the way to the food court.

Jak turned his head as the young man, Gray, sat beside him after waking up. He shook his head and smiled when the latter asked him a question.
'Nothing much. Bit tired, that's all.'
He then jumped at the sound of the car alarm, his pistol instinctively exiting the holster and aimed at the sound of the alarm. He holstered it a few moments after he realised that it was just a car alarm.
'Fuck! That ain't good.'
He looked about the car park, spotting nothing but other abandoned cars. It wouldn't be empty for long, though.
'I guess the Infected sons 'a bitches are gonna swarm us now, eh?'
