He frowned slightly at the door, knocking even harder. "Milena...we have to get going..it's not safe here..."

Milena rolled over, careful not to crush Hunter, and sat up. She gazed blearily at the door. “Conyer,” she muttered so that he couldn't hear, “You are a pain in my ass right now.” She stumbled over to the door and poked her head out. Her blonde hair was charmingly disheveled. “Where are we going?” she asked.

"We need to make it to the apartment building..." He shrunk back slightly from her tone when she stuck her head out. "It should still have power, and maybe a few food stores nearby...and at least a good view of the area..." He watched her for her reaction. "It's dawn, so we can move around easier..."

Milena's heart softened a bit. She said, “Fine, but when we get there I'm going to sleep for sixteen hours straight,” and shut the door gently.
She was a sixteen-year old girl, so the natural thing for her to do was go through the closet and find yet another change of clothes. This time it was a grey sweater and black cargo pants. Running her fingers through her hair, she prayed that she looked a little more orderly than she felt. Then she felt stupid for caring about appearances in the middle of zombie hell.
On the other hand, the day she stopped caring would be the day she became officially dead inside. So maybe it was a good thing she could still appreciate grey cashmere.
Hunter got a quick diaper change and was swathed in another sweater, and then they were ready to go. Milena stuck her head back out the door. “Conyer?”

Once she shut the door, Conyer headed back down the hall to the kitchen, having put off the search for food as long as he could. He went through each cabinet again, with no luck, before turning to the doors in the kitchen, one leading to a small pantry, which was also empty, and the other leading down to the basement, the one room he hadn't checked. Slowly, he made his way down the stairs, figuring that a small look couldn't hurt, just in case some survivors were down there, or a food supply.
The wooden steps creaked under his sneakers as he moved, unable to see much in the darkness. His hand ran along the wall, feeling for a light switch. He heard the sound first, a soft squishing sound coming from the darkness. His eyes slowly adjusted to the dark and he saw the light switch at the bottom of the stairs, turning his head once he acknowledged it's presence to see what had made the sound.
There, in the middle of the basement, were the bodies of what Conyer figured were the previous survivors that had tried to stay in the house. Hovered over one, down on all fours and eating like an animal, was a large grey figure, its long legs pulled up under it. Conyer gasped slightly, quickly covering his mouth with both hands to keep himself from screaming. He heard Milena's voice and turned to return slowly, his foot stepping up to the next step, the old wood emitting a loud creak. He froze, his eyes darting back to the figure, which had paused at the sound, looking directly back at him. Conyer's breath sped up, shaking all over, his eyes going wide, before climbing the stairs as quickly as possibly, not worrying anymore about the noise.
Once at the top, he slammed the door shut, locking it from the kitchen, though he wasn't sure how long it would hold him, hearing the loud bang from the creature hitting the door behind him. He ran for the living room, gathering the bags again. "Milena! We have to leave! Now! There's a Vermin in the house!"

frantically downstairs. “Gosh darnit,” she muttered, yanking the drawer out of the nightstand and upending it on the floor. Hunter let out a gurgle of agreement and stuck his fist in his mouth. Milena picked out a couple of things from the heap on the ground: a bottle of Cymbalta, a broken pocketknife, a keychain from the '08 Olympics (a good omen) attached to a ring with a couple of car keys on it. SCORE!!! Then she hefted Hunter in one arm and her duffel in the other and made for the living room.
When she got there, she placed a hand on Conyer's shoulder to steady him. He looked pretty wild. “We're not running anymore,” she said softly. “Can you drive?”

He was still breathing heavily and even jumped when Milena put her hand on his shoulder. "Hu...somewhat...I never got my license..only my learners..." He looked to the keys in her hand, holding his hand out for them.

“That's more than I ever got,” Milena said. “I trust you not to kill us. I'm assuming the car is in the garage.” She flipped him the keys and hastily made for the door.
With any luck, they would find a safe place before nightfall. Milena was still very tired and cranky and would have given her right arm for a full night's sleep.

He took the keys from her, quickly heading out of the door he'd discovered earlier to be the garage. He hadn't looked through there yet, only noticed the big open space. He moved out into the garage, pulling the door at the end up quickly before running around to the drivers side, silently praising the family that owned the car for buying an automatic instead of a stick. He got in quickly, starting the car and waiting for Milena to get in before slowly backing out of the driveway. He hadn't done this in a while, and he was sure he was a bit rusty with it. His hands shook on the steering wheel as he straightened the car into the road and put it in Drive.

“Wait! Parking brake!” Milena giggled nervously. She reached over and undid the brake for Conyer. Then she bounced up and down on the seat a few times while Hunter babbled wordlessly in her lap. “I think we need to go west.”

He frowned slightly at her directions, looking at the road. "The road runs north and south...." He looked up at the direction the sun had set in, checking himself before nodding.

“Oh,” Milena said, confused. “But I thought... OK never mind.” She shrunk into herself a bit and looked out the window.

he smiled slightly, blushing at correcting her before driving slowly down the street, watching for any debris in the road. "So where are we going exactly...?"

“I don't know,” was her response. “Those apartments you saw?”

He nodded slightly. "You don't know the way there by any chance, do you?" He realized that he knew nothing about the girl beside him, and that she knew nothing about him. He paused a moment before asking her. "So who are you anyway...? I mean...I know your name, but that's it...and we have the drive to talk...so...."
