So they were at an impasse. Tommy pondered a minute longer, then he said, “See that extension cord? I want you to tie up your legs. Then we can relax and have a little conversation. I don't want to hurt you, but I wouldn't have made it this far if I were squeamish about killing zombies.”
He folded his arms (well, just one arm) and waited.

"*...You realise how difficult that'd be with these, right?*" Campbell asked, motioning to his clawed hands. When the irishman did not reply, he simply went to work with what he could, mumbling as he did.
Using both the dull edges of the claws and at times, grasping the cord between his teeth, Jack eventually managed to bind both his legs together until the point that he slowly began to lose the feeling in them.
"Aight, that oughta do it. Tighter than Ed Wood's budget. So what exactly did you wish to know?"

“Do you feel pain?” Tommy asked, revving the saw with a wicked glint in his eyes. Even though he felt sorry for it, it wouldn't hurt if the creature known as Jack/Campbell was afraid of him. More importantly, though, it was a philosophical question. If zombies felt pain, then there was a part of them that was still human, and God knows it wouldn't be right to run around killing them blindly as he had done.
In a different lifetime, perhaps he and the sorry creature would have been friends.
“Never mind,” said Tommy, feeling a flash of conscience. “Maybe that's not a fair question. I really don't want to hurt you. Do you remember what it was like before...?” He gestured at the Leech's talons.

Instantly relieved at the notion that he wasn't about to be gashed horribly upon a saw, Jack had a brief moment of thought to re-establish himself somewhat.
"I sort of remember, not so much how it happened, but more or less a fair percentage of it."
His shoulders visibly relaxed and sagged as he sighed and sadly continued to speak.
"Oh good Goddess how simple things were. The only slimy bastards you had to worry about were lawyers and muggers. Problems such as when you were gonna ask that beautiful lady out seemed so much more important... I didn't realise she'd had the injection. When I did finally notice, she went all vermin and attacked me. I awoke with these, and my flatmate lying in a pool of his own blood."
Jack slowly bowed his head in rememberance, his eyes dulled somewhat.

Well, this makes things awkward. Tommy bowed his head as well. “I'm sorry, friend,” he murmured, placing his hand over Jack's own. Remembering himself in time, he quickly pulled himself back. “Have you killed a lot of people?” he asked, avoiding the other man's eyes.

Campbell brought his head up, unaffected by Jack's state of depression.
"*I'll field this one, so yes. On a whole, I have killed a large number of people. But,*" he added as he raised one hand as if swearing by the bible. "*Only those who discuss matters with their firearms and those too far gone from sanity to survive the night.*"

It was settled. The creature had tugged at his heartstrings, and Tommy was captivated. “I don't believe you're evil at all,” decided the Irishman. “Just dangerous.”
“I want to find other survivors. I want you to help me hunt them down, but I don't want you to hurt them. If we can do this together then I will figure out a way to keep you fed and search for a cure.”

"Yeah?" Jack asked with all seriousness and sincerity. "Th-Thank you..."

Tommy loosened the cords just enough so that his companion could hobble, and found another cord to use as a lead. “Are you...” he said hesitantly, “are you hungry?”

"*Nice of you to ask, but not really.*" He replied, getting to his feet.
"*We really only need to feed once a week, so I won't need to for another 3 days or so.*"

“Alright!” exclaimed Tommy. “I think we're good to go. What I want to do is go outside and look for signs of life.” Tommy got to his feet. “As soon as you've proven yourself in battle once or twice, the lead comes off. I can't think of what else to do,” he explained apologetically, “So for that I'm sorry, friend.”
“Can you sniff out survivors from a long way away? If not, we'll just have to go exploring and get our hands dirty.”

*So, just find some people and we get back to the status quo? Sounds easy enough.*
"Prove self in battle, seek survivors, gotcha. Will do Mr... um... What did you say your name was?"

“Tommy Madden, at your service.” Tommy inclined his head slightly and continued. “Born and raised in the Bronx, despite the accent. Let's get the hell out of here.” He tugged on the extension cord that dangled between Jack/Campbell's hands, pulling the captive to his feet. Tommy looped the other end of the cord around his own waist so that he would have his hand free. Then he went to the door to survey the rest of the mall.
Tommy sniffed suddenly. There was a distinct smell of smoke to the air. And if it was strong enough to burn his human eyes, then surely it bothered the Leech even more. “Gotta run!” yelled Tommy.

"Fire? Oh crap!"
The thought of his temporary residence and favoured monument to his past life being burnt to ashes struck a cord with Jack, momentarily stopping him from advancing. But the presence of a man, this Thomas Madden, who was willing to assist him, soothed the pain and brought him back into the present.
"Right, so are we fleeing this blaze, or are we figuring out who caused it?

“We'd best figure out what's going on. I hate to get kicked out of someplace without at least knowing why.” So, pulling his collar up over his mouth to filter out the smoke, Tommy led the way towards the source of the flames.
